Photographing a redwood forest with Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) can transform the towering trees and ethereal light into a dreamy, abstract work of art.
The key to this technique is embracing the movement of your camera to create fluid, organic blur, adding depth and emotion to the scene.
In this image i’ve slowed the camera’s shutter speed and then swept the camera upwards to influence the image. By experimenting with the vertical sweep, mimicking the majestic rise of the redwoods or the dance of light through the canopy, the trees are turned into elongated grey toned, or colour stripes.
ICM helps convey the awe-inspiring scale and mystery of the forest, emphasizing not just the trees but the atmosphere and movement within it. In the selection of shots below, you’ll can see how the abstract interpretation of the redwoods varies and really goes beyond the traditional approach, capturing their true, timeless spirit.
