Winter in Hokkaido offers a unique opportunity to photograph Black Kites near Lake Furen, where the stark, snowy landscape creates a dramatic backdrop for these majestic birds.

The contrast between the deep blue skies, frosty surroundings, and the birds’ dark plumage enhances the intensity of your shots, making each moment more captivating.

In this image I have used a long lens to capture the Kite in the sky and a fast shutter speed to freeze it in flight. I chose to print it in black and white as i feel it better shows the stunning plumage of this beautiful bird.

During the winter months, when the winter light in Hokkaido is soft and diffused the Black Kites are often seen hunting over the frozen lake, their dark wings cutting through the crisp air.
