Silver Gull photographed using ICM and a slow shutter speed to emphasis blur in both the subject and its shadow as it lands on the water.

I was very excited to be selected as a contributing artist for the PICES 2024 Pop Up Exhibitions which was held at Berninneit Art Gallery in Cowes, here on Phillip Island.

I’d tested the waters with a selection of this series of works at Meeniyan in mid 2023 and was excited by the results of how they looked. In an effort though to improve I decided to go bigger on a number of prints and also play a little with the orientation and underlying colour palette, which was still very blue but lightened a touch to create a further sense of ethereal presence in the work.

I absolutely loved the results and was excited to see 2 of my 6 Limited Edition works find new homes.

The artist statement for this series:

As a photographer who is inspired by all things nature, wildlife and culture I am continuously spellbound by the sheer beauty and diversity of our wonderful world.     In recent years I’ve been driven to further experiment and create outside of the usual photographic boundaries.

The humble seagull is generally a bird that rarely gets a second look.    However, they emerged as the perfect subject matter for this series of images given their common, plentiful presence and quite often brash behaviour as chip stealing fiends.

This series of Limited Edition images were produced entirely in camera with none of the content digitally created.   Their impressionistic style and painterly effect, was created by photographing these birds using Intentional Camera Movement techniques combined with very slow shutter speeds to emphasize movement, create blur and transform what may be considered quite ordinary more towards the abstract extrordinary.

These gorgeous prints are available to view and purchase at my gallery on Phillip Island.

Stunning image shot using Intentional Camera Movement on the beach in Cowes on Phillip Island just after sunset capturing Silver Gulls and their shadows with a slow shutter speed resulting in a dreamy image that works to convey ethereal emotion and beauty.
Silver Gulls photographed using slow shutter speed and Intentional Camera Movement which results in a dreamy mass of movement of the birds interspersed with splashes of water streaming up from the ocean surface.
Single Silver Gull landing near the ocean shoreline but captured using Intentional Camera Movement and a slow shutter speed to define the sense of movement and motion in both the subject and it's shadow on the water's surface.
Intentional Camera Movement and a slow shutter speed come together to show a Silver Gull being followed by another gull which present with significantly more blur which still clearly conveys the subject matter.
A frenzy of Silver Gulls eating the leftovers thrown into the water by a fisherman on the docks down at Newhaven on Phillip Island. The slow shutter speed and movement results in a mass of wings and birds all clearly in frenzied movement.
A Silver Gull photographed using intentional camera movement and a slow shutter speed to show the exact moment the gull has landed in the water with its wings still stretched upwards and the movement of the water looking more like clouds.
